Serving Williamsburg Veterans Since 1929
Our History
American Legion Kuch-Querl Post 228 has been part of the Williamsburg community for nearly a century. The post was chartered by The American Legion on March 21, 1929, during a time when communities across the country were organizing local posts to support veterans returning from service and to continue a tradition of service to their hometowns.
Post 228 is named in honor of two Williamsburg natives who gave their lives while serving their country. Roy Earl Kuch served in World War I and was killed in action in France on August 11, 1918. William Querl served during World War II and was captured by Japanese forces. He died in captivity on June 16, 1943 and is buried in the Philippines. Their sacrifice represents the spirit of service and dedication that the post continues to honor today.
The American Legion itself was founded in 1919 by veterans returning from World War I who believed that service to the nation should continue even after military duty ended. The organization has since grown into one of the nation’s largest veterans service organizations, supporting veterans, their families, active-duty service members, and local communities.
For generations, Kuch-Querl Post 228 has served as a gathering place for veterans in Williamsburg and the surrounding communities. Members work to support fellow veterans, honor those who served, and promote patriotism through community events, ceremonies, and programs that strengthen civic life.
Today, Post 228 continues that tradition by hosting events, supporting veteran initiatives, and participating in community activities throughout Iowa County. The post remains committed to honoring the legacy of those who served while supporting current and future generations of veterans.
Post meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Legion hall located at 208 W State Street in Williamsburg, Iowa.
